WORLD WAR II EXHIBIT ACTIVITY
INTRODUCTION:
This year, 2020, marks the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II. The Second World War was a watershed in 20th Century History affecting people across the United States and around the world. America and its allies engaged in an epic struggle to defeat the forces of fascism, tyranny, and dictatorship of the Axis powers of Germany, Italy, and Japan. The conflict consumed the lives of millions of people and witnessed the horrors of the Holocaust. Cities were destroyed. Resources wasted. The atomic age began. At the end of the war, the Axis powers were defeated by “The Greatest Generation.”
For this activity, we as a class will design an exhibit to be placed in the Huie Library which will tell the story of America’s participation in the Second World War. This is to be a professional, museum-style exhibition. This will not be 4th grade “science project” style.
We will develop the concept for this project with the help of Dr. Sesser from the Huie Library and professor of museum studies. Our project will occurred in different phases and steps. As this is a “work in progress” more will be added to these instructions as we move along.
PHASES:
GROUPS: What we will begin with is forming groups. Begin thinking of who you would like to work with. There will be three individuals per group.
EXHIBIT TOPICS:
We will also determine what topics regarding America and World War II we want to cover in order to present the story.
EXHIBIT RESEARCH:
Each group will chose a topic/topics it will do. The group then will research that topic and begin to tell the story related to the topic.
From time to time we will use part of a class session to go over the research to ensure continuity. We will critique other’s work for purposes of improvement.
EXHIBIT CONSTRUCTION:
Dr. Sesser will visit class from time to time to help with the organization and presentation of the exhibition. He will go over how to build your exhibits.
LIBRARY EXHIBITION:
Once the exhibition is complete, we will showcase it in the Huie Library. The exhibition will begin in April and run through May.
