world  war  ii:  examination  1  Review

Examination 1 Review:

This is the first of your three examinations.  It will cover chapters 1 to 9 in your textbook and my lectures up through the Balkans Campaign but not the Invasion of the Soviet Union or beyond.

The exam is essay.  You will need to bring a bluebook (I prefer that you use the large bluebooks).  It will be divided into three sections.

Section 1 will be short answer identification.  You will need to identify and state the historical significance of several terms.  I will provide a list below that might be on the exam.  I will not include any term on the exam that are not listed below.

Section 2 you will need to write an essay.  This essay will be worth 40 points.  I will give you two questions and you will choose one to answer.

Section 3 will be the same as Section 2.  You will write an essay worth 40 points.  As with section 2, I will give you two question and you choose one to answer.

TOPICS COVERED:

You need to be familiar with all the major events leading up to World War II and the early part of the War—i.e. through the Balkans Campaign.

Ø  Know what role World War I played in the coming of World War II and how it affected peoples’ attitudes during the inter-war period and the belligerents’ approach to fighting World War II.

Ø  Understand and be able to describe how the dictators came to power—i.e. Hitler and Mussolini.  What role did the Great Depression play in their rise and consolidation of power?

Ø  Be able to discuss Hitler’s foreign policy and bloodless victories during the middle and late 1930s.  Know why the western democracies were hesitant to try to stop Hitler.  Also be able to discuss the role of the Spanish Civil war and Axis participation in that conflict

Ø  What were Mussolini’s ambitions?  How did he attempt to create his own empire?  What were the primary colonies he was interested in?

Ø  How did Hitler and Mussolini end up joining forces and creating the Rome-Berlin Axis in the 1930s?

Ø  Be able to discuss the outbreak of war in Poland and the significance of the Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact of August 1939.  How was Poland defeated?  What role did the Soviets play?  What tactics did the Germans employ against Poland

Ø  Know and be able to describe the Winter War 1939-1940.  What was the significance?

Ø  What was happening in the West from September 1939 to the Spring of 1940?  Why was this known as the “Phony War?”  Why did both sides avoid fighting on that front?

Ø  What were Hitler’s ambitions in Scandinavia?  How did this change the strategic development of the War?

Ø  Be able to discuss the German invasion of the Low Countries and France in May and June 1940.

Ø  Look over the Battle of Britain and the importance of that battle.  Why were the Germans not successful in obtaining victory?  How did this change the dynamics of World War II?

Ø  What led to the Balkans Campaign?  Why is that significant?
