Examination 1 Review:
This will be your first examination. You will need a bluebook for the exam. There will be three parts on the exam: Part 1) Short Answer/ID from the terms listed below (20 points total) ; Parts 2 & 3) Long essays related to the key concepts below (40 points each).

KEY CONCEPTS:
- Know the two schools of Russian History—Westerner and Slavophile. How did each approach Russian History? What makes Russian History “Western” and what makes it non-western?
- What were the origins of the first Russian state, Kiev?
- Be sure to know how Russia adopted Christianity and why the religion was important in Russia’s development? How did Russia see itself after adopting Christianity?
- Look over the major events of the Mongol conquest of Russia. How did the Russians and Mongols see each other? How did the Mongols rule Russia? How did the Russians respond? How were the Russians able to drive off the Mongols?
- What impact did the Mongol have on Russia politically? Socially? Economically?
- Study the rise of Moscow (Muscovy Russia).
- Russia has been ruled by strong, powerful, and sometimes insane leaders. Look at the reign of Ivan the Terrible. Be able to discuss his personality, reign, and the Reign of Terror he imposed on Russia. How did this affect Russia?
- Boris Goduov was another controversial leader. Study his rise to power and the consequences of his reign.
- What was the Times of Trouble in Russia? Why was this period so named? Who were major figures during the Times of Trouble?
- Study over the religious conflict in Russia during the 17th Century.
- How did Peter the Great come to power? How was he able to consolidate his hold on power?
- Be able to discuss Peter the Great’s desire to Westernize and the process in which he tried to Westernize Russia. How successful was he in his endeavor? What changed in Russia? Were the changes long-lasting?
