examination  1  review:

GERMAN  HISTORY EXAMINATION  REVIEW  #1
 
Your first examination will cover chapters 1-4 of your text inclusive.  The examination will consist of three sections.  Section I will be short answer identification (20 points possible).  Section II and Section III will be long essays.  (Each worth 40 points.)  It will all be essay so you will need a blue book (examination book).

THINGS TO KNOW:
  • What is the German Question?
  • Understand the issues regarding German divisiveness (disunity of Germany) and the urge to centralize.  What are things that contribute to German divisiveness and the urge to centralize?
  • Understand the theme of dualism in German history.
  • Know how Prussia evolved from 1640 to the rise of Fredrick the Great in 1740.  Who were the rulers of Prussia during this time and what were their contributions to the rise of Prussia?
  • Be able to describe the reign of Fredrick the Great (1740-1788).  What made him unique?  What did he accomplish during his long reign?  What roles did the War of Austrian Succession and the Seven Years’ War play in his reign?
  • What happened in Austria during the reigns of Maria Theresa and Joseph II?  What reforms did they undertake as enlightened absolute monarchs?
  • What was the status of the Germanies prior to the French Revolution?
  • How did the Germanic states react to the outbreak of the French Revolution? 
  • What led to the outbreak of the War of the First Coalition?
  • Know the reasons why Prussia concluded a separate peace with France and its consequences.
  • Understand the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire.
  • Know why Prussia went to war with France in 1805 and the consequences.  How did this give birth to German nationalism? Be able to discuss the wars of German liberation.
  • Be able to discuss the Congress of Vienna and how it applies to the Germanies.  Know the role of Metternich and his views on Germany.  What was meant by “Restoration” and how was that applied to Germany?
  • Be able to define 19th Century Conservatism, Liberalism, and Nationalism.  Know that goals of each of the ideologies.  Understand the conflict between the forces of Liberalism and Nationalism against the post-Napoleonic Conservative order.  What groups in the Germanies challenged the conservative order and how did that play out?
  • Be able to discuss the role Prussia had in the economic development of Germany in the 1830s and 1840s.
  • What issues led to the Revolutions of 1848 in general and also in the case of the Germanies?  Know how the Revolutions of 1848 played out in the three major areas of the German revolutions—i.e. Austria, Berlin, and Frankfurt.  Also know why Germany was unable to unify as a liberal nation-state at this time.
  • Be able to discuss the rivalry between Austria and Prussia after the 1848 Revolutions.
  • Know the parliamentary crisis in Prussia in the early 1860s.  Why was Bismarck called in?  How did Bismarck deal with the Parliament?  Was he successful?
  • Describe Bismarck.
  • How was Bismarck able to unify Germany?  How did his approach differ from that of the liberals prior to the rise of Bismarck?
  • Understand the issues Bismarck faced once he had unified Germany.  What were the two domestic challenges and how did Bismarck address each?  Was he successful?
  • Be able to describe Bismarck’s foreign policy between 1871 and 1890.
