EXAM 2 REVIEW
Your second examination will cover chapters 7-9 in the Neely book and chapters 1-2 in the Johnson biography of Napoleon.
 
Things to Know:
What led to the fall of the monarchy in 1792?
Be able to discuss the events of September 1792, including the September Massacre, the abolition of the monarchy and the proclamation of the republic
Who were the San-Culottes and what did they desire?  How/why did they ally themselves with the Mountain?
Discuss the spread of the war in Europe in 1792/1793.
Study the trial of Louis XVI.  Know why he was executed.  What were the roles of the Jacobins and the Girondins.  Know who prevailed and the consequences of this.
What led to the purge of the Girondin from the Convention?
Discuss the role of Jean-Paul Marat.  What were his views?  How did he influence the Revolution?  What were the circumstances of his murder?
What were the Committee of Public Safety and the Committee of General Security?
Know who Danton and Robespierre were and what they did in the Revolution.
Discuss the origins and course of the Reign of Terror.
Why did Robespierre fall?
Discuss the Thermidorian Reaction.  In what ways did the Revolution moderate?  Describe the Constitution of the Year III (1795).  Also know what the White Terror was. 
Know what happened concerning the Royalist uprising on 5 October 1795.
Discuss Napoleon’s rise from an obscure Corsican origin to this seizure of power in 1799.  What did he do to get where he was?
What reforms did Napoleon institute upon his seizure of power?
