19th Century Europe--Final Exam Review
This examination will cover chapters 4to 7 in your text, The Age of Nationalism and Reform, 1850-1890. Make sure you read over these chapters thoroughly.
CHAPTER 4: Disruption of the Concert of Europe:
· You should be familiar with the rise of Napoleon III in France and how he consolidated power.
· Know the steps he went through to consolidate power and destroy the 2nd Republic.
· Also know the essentials of how he created the 2nd Empire.
· What were is goals and ambitions?
· How did he address both domestic and foreign issues to achieve his goals during his 22 years in power?
· Pay especial attention to the Crimean War.
· How did the war come about?
· What were the underlying and overt causes of the war?
· How would the war affect the different combatants?
· Be able to explain the role it would play in the unification movements of Germany and Italy.
CHAPTER 5: The National Revolutions:
· I'm mainly concerned with the two major unifications: Germany and Italy.
· Study the issues behind each. Know who the major players were and how they were able to bring about the unification of their respective countries.
· Be able to compare and contrast Bismarck to Cavour and Geribaldi.
· How were Bismarck's attitudes different--i.e. Prussian patriot rather than nationalists?
CHAPTER 6: The Course of Reform: Great Britain and Russia:
· This chapter covers the reform movements in Great Britain and Russia.
· Know the domestic reform policies of Prime Minister Palmerston in the late 1860s—In particular, be able to discuss the Reform Bill of 1867. What reform did it bring to Britain?
· Be able to discuss the first Prime Ministry of Gladstone. What reform and laws did Gladstone get passed during the period from 1868-1874.
· You should be able to compare and contrast Disraeli and Gladstone. What were the primary features of Disraeli’s Prime Ministry between 1874-1880.
· The Irish Question was a major issue of Gladstone’s second Prime Ministry. How did Gladstone approach the Irish Question?
· What other reforms was Gladstone able to get passed during his second tenure at Prime Minister?
· Be able to discuss the reforms of Alexander II. What brought on these reforms? In particular, know about the Emancipation of the Serfs.
· What was the nature of the Revolutionary movement in Russia? How did it begin? What phases did it go through? Know what led up to Lenin and the Bolsheviks.
· You should know the Russian Tsars from Alexander II to Nicholas II and what they did.

· This chapter covers the events in Italy, Germany, France and Austria-Hungary during the last quarter of the 19th century. I will be looking primarily at Germany and France.
· Be able to discuss the Bismarckean Empire (1871-1890). What issues did Bismarck face after unification?
· Know Bismarck’s approach to the Catholics and the Socialists.
· What role did Wilhelm II (William II) play in German affairs before and after 1890?
· How was the Third Republic in France received? Why was it not readily accepted?
· What challenges did the Third Republic face between 1871 and 1875? Why did the Republic last after 1875?
· Discuss the Boulanger affair and the Dreyfus affair in France. How did each affect the Third Republic.
