ANNOTATED  BIBLIOGRAPHY  INSTRUCTIONS:

You are required to turn in an annotated bibliography for your paper.  An annotated bibliography differs from a “regular” bibliography or works cited page.  In addition to the titles and publishing information of a source, an annotated bibliography includes a description of the source as well.

For the purposes of this course and the required paper, I am including several guidelines.

  1. INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH:  Your annotated bibliography should include an introductory paragraph describing your research project.  This will include the topic of your paper and the thesis statement for your paper.
  2. SOURCES/ANNOTATIONS:  You will list your sources.  If using primary sources (which I strongly urge you to do) separate those from the secondary sources.  After each source, there should be a description of the source including the main ideas, themes and theses of the source.  You also should include how you will use the particular source in your paper.  You will want to link this to your thesis statement.

Be thorough in your annotations.  I have not set a minimum number of sources for the paper, but you should use no fewer that about five different sources.  I strongly recommend that you use primary sources where available.  Do not use on-line encyclopedias or the likes.  Use reputable sources—both primary and secondary.  Also, your bibliographical entries need to conform to Chicago style.  I will not accept your paper if it is not in Chicago style..
