Chapter 1: “The Beginning of a New Century”
· Be able to discuss the demographic changes in Europe.
· What was the 2nd Industrial Revolution and how did it affect Europe? Europe’s population increase?
· Understand what New Imperialism was. Know the reasons why New Imperialism became possible during the late nineteenth century. Why were Western powers eager to obtain colonies? What were the motivations for the imperialistic tendencies of Western nations during this period?
· What were the different social classes of society? Who were the working classes and who were the middle classes? What role did each play in society?
Chapter 2: “Politics and Society, 1890-1914”
Great Britain:
· What was the nature of Great Britain during the last third of the 19th Century?
· Be able to discuss the Labor movement and the rise of the Labour party.
· Understand the expansion of democracy in Great Britain.
· How was the Liberal Party able to come to power and hold on to power in Great Britain?
· Discuss the women’s suffrage movement.
· What was the Irish question and how did it play out in pre-World War I Britain?
France and the Third Republic:
· What were the origins of the Third Republic in France?
· Discuss the challenges to the Third Republic—Boulanger Affair and Dreyfus Affair.
· Discuss French foreign policy from 1871-1914. What were the goals of French foreign policy? Discuss the formation of the Franco-Russian alliance and the Entente Cordiale
Italy:
· Why was Italy unstable between the time of unification and the First World War?
· Discuss Italy’s foreign policy from the late 19th century until the outbreak of World War I.
The Rise of the German Empire, 1871-1890:
· How did the emergence of the German Empire after 1871 alter the balance of power in Europe? What were Bismarck’s goals for Germany? Know the goals Bismarck pursued in his diplomatic negotiations with other nations
· Understand Kaiser Wilhelm (William) II. Describe his personality and know how that affected German development in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries.
· Who were Bismarck’s replacements? What was William’s reasoning for appointing these men chancellor?
· Why did William and Tirpitz decide to build a large battle fleet? What were their foreign and domestic goals in building up the fleet? What were the consequences?
· Be able to discuss German foreign relations from 1890 to 1914. How did colonization fit into foreign affairs? What were the consequences?
Austria-Hungary:
· How did the dual monarchy develop? What was the Ausgleich and how did it affect Austria-Hungary?
· What problems did Austria-Hungary face regarding national minorities and what were some possible solutions?
Russia:
· Discuss the Russian revolutionary movement during the late 19th Century and early 20th Century. How did it evolve into Lenin’s Bolshevik movement?
· What led to the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese war? Why did Russia do so poorly? How did the Russo-Japanese war lead to the Revolution of 1905? What changes occurred as a result of the Revolution of 1905?

· Know the circumstances that led to the creation of the Triple Alliance and the Triple Entente
· Who were members of each?

· What crises led to the War?
· Know how the Balkan crises incited the beginning of World War I
· What was the role played by alliances among the great powers in preventing the war from remaining localized in the Balkans
Outbreak of World War I:
· Know the origins of the First World War. What role did Germany play in the coming of World War I? What was the role of nationalism in the outbreak of the war?

· What were the German and French strategies
· Why the Schlieffen plan failed
· Know what brought about the Russian Revolutions in 1917.
· What were the reasons for the Russian Revolution?
· Be familiar with the provisional government that initially took over after the abdication of the tsar (March 1917-Oct. 1917) and why it failed. Know how the provisional government was set up and the Petrograd Soviet as well as the relationship between the two. The Kerenskii Offensive and the Kornilov coup.

· What was the impact of the Bolshevik government on World War I?
The German Revolutions, 1918, 1919:
· Be able to discuss the German revolutions at the end of the war and why German ended up with the Weimar Republic.

· What was the Spartakus Bund/League? Who were the leaders and what did they attempt to achieve?
